Gin Rummy is maybe the most popular forms of rummy. The game is played by two players, each receiving ten cards.
The object of the game is to arrange your 10 cards into sets as quickly as possible so that you can end the round before your opponent does, and accumulate more points.
Gin Rummy games can vary from ‘first to knock’, ‘50 point match play’, ‘100 point match play’ and ‘200 point match play’ etc. Once a round has ended, the points are automatically calculated, the scores are calculated and a winner for the round is declared.
At this time, the game can end, or proceed to the next round until the requisite amount of points are reached and a final winner of the match is declared. The twenty-first card is turned face up to start the ‘waste pile’ and the remainder of the deck is placed face down beside it to form the deck pile.
For the first play of the hand, the draw is done in a special way. The first player chooses whether to take the turned-up card. If they decline it, they pass the opportunity to take the turned-up card to the second player.
If both players refuse the turned-up card, play returns to the first player who draws the top card from the deck pile. Whichever player took a card completes their turn by discarding a card to the waste or knock pile and then play continues in turn.
At the start of each round, it will be wise to sort your cards into sets, or possible sets, and separate these cards from the deadwood which you may want to discard.
Doing this early on will make it quicker and easier for you to decide which cards to keep and which to discard throughout the game.
In general, because high valued cards increase your deadwood value, it may be wise to try to discard these as quickly as possible in case your opponent ‘knocks’ early on in the round.
It is important to take note of which cards your opponent takes from the ‘waste’ pile, which cards he does not want from the waste pile, and which cards he discards
